Chinon - Castle and Fortress
The castle was once a 12th Century fortress and home to the former King of England Henry II. It is here that he was defeated by his sons and died in the grounds. Many parts of the Chateau are in ruins but under major renovation. If you're brave you can enter the deep dark dungeon, although lack of air may have you exiting quickly! If you do down, don't miss the carvings made by the 'Knights Templar' who were imprisoned in the 13th.
Joan of Arc began her quest at Chinon to save France from the English and persuaded the Dauphin to declare himself King of France and raise an army although further persuading was needed at the Loches Chateau for history buffs. Don't miss the shrine to Joan of Arc.
